学术

  • Sudden decline in quality of work and grades
  • Frequently missed classes and assignments
  • Disturbing content in writing or presentations
  • 课堂秩序
  • Consistently seeking personal rather than professional advice
  • Multiple requests for extensions/special considerations (a change from prior functioning)
  • Doesn’t respond to repeated requests for contact/meetings

物理

  • Marked changes in physical appearance (e.g., poor grooming/hygiene or sudden weight 损失/收益)
  • Strange or bizarre behavior indicating loss of contact 与 reality
  • Visibly intoxicated or smelling of alcohol or marijuana
  • 语速快或狂躁的行为
  • Depressed or lethargic mood or functioning

心理

  • Self-disclosure of personal distress (e.g.、家庭问题. 财政困难, assault, discrimination, legal difficulties)

  • Verbal, written, or implied references to suicide, homicide, assault or self-injurious 行为
  • Unprovoked anger or hostility/physical violence (e.g., shoving, grabbing, assaulting, 使用武器)
  • 学术 assignments dominated by themes of extreme hopelessness, helplessness, isolation, rage, despair, violence, self-injury
  • 跟踪或骚扰
  • Communicating threats/disturbing comments via email, correspondence, texting or phone 呼叫

2. 回应

Use these important tips to determine the most appropriate 响应 for a distressed 学生.

-注意安全

请致电 (972) 265-5911or 911 if there is an imminent danger to the 学生, you, or anyone else.

-保持冷静

Take a few deep breaths to calm yourself. Use a calm voice when talking and asking 问题.

-慢慢来

If this is NOT an imminently dangerous situation, take time to think through what might be the most helpful next step.

-寻求咨询

你并不孤单. 向你周围的人寻求帮助. Consult 与 a colleague or 呼叫 另一个办公室.

-积极倾听

Make eye contact and give your full attention. Restate what the 学生 says to make sure you understand what is causing the distress and/or what they are asking for help 与.

问直接的问题

Don’t be afraid to directly ask the 学生 if they are having thoughts of harming themselves or others (by asking, you are not instilling the thought).

Help get them to the next step (e.g., contact the academic advisor 与 the 学生 to make an appointment; help them to schedule an appointment 与 the UDCC).
